How does electrical stimulation affect brain networks? (2018–2019)

Abstract:
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is widely used to modulate brain function and behaviour in health and disease. However, relatively little is known about how tDCS impacts complex human brain networks. Such knowledge is necessary to enhance the effectiveness of current stimulation protocols. We aim to address this knowledge gap by integrating biophysical models of electrical current flow and computer simulations of stimulation effects with advanced brain imaging network analysis. Our innovative and interdisciplinary approach will provide crucial mechanistic information about how tDCS modulates healthy brain function which has broad implications for research and clinical use of this technique.
