Mass spectrometry for next generation isotope analysis of silicate minerals (ARC LIEF grant administered by The University of Adelaide) (2018–2019)

Abstract:
This proposal aims to establish a distributed facility for preparative equipment and mass spectrometers to enable a step change in Australian capacity to analyse the stable isotope composition of silicate minerals. The stable isotope composition of silicate minerals provides a fingerprint and tracer of geological and environmental processes employed across the earth sciences, environmental sciences and archaeology in research ranging from ore deposit formation to past environmental change to identifying trade networks from lithic artefacts. The project seeks to implement innovations that will greatly enhance the use of stable isotopes in silicate minerals in all these areas by increasing analytical throughput and reducing cost.
