Increasing student engagement in active learning through feedback on pre-reading quizzes (2017–2018)

Abstract:
Aims: We will increase the impact of our ¿Semant¿ software that simplifies the marking and analysis of pre-reading quizzes for active learning classes in two ways. (1) We will develop and incorporate a feedback system that scales to large class sizes. (2) We will increase the adoption of the system by providing training support to users, as well as making it available outside the Blackboard environment. Significance: Preparation is an essential element of active learning classes. We encourage students to invest time in preparation by setting written pre-reading quizzes, but their engagement is hampered in large classes because we cannot give personal feedback to all of their answers. Outcomes: (1) We will develop a system to provide feedback on student quiz answers that scales to large classes. This will increase student engagement, as well as help students to learn to answer such questions for future summative assessment. (2) We will increase the adoption of Semant for both teaching and for learning research.
