Deep Downunder: designing a deep-sea exploration and discovery capability for Australia (2007–2011)

Abstract:
Australia's deep-sea, is an ecosystem we have never been to and rarely sampled from. This is about to change through a collaborative partnership with DeepOceanQuest.com, their 1000m submersibles, and deep-sea sampling capability that this partnership will construct. Seamounts rising from the abyssal plain to near surface and what lies beyond The Great Barrier Reef in deep drop-offs are among the habitats to be explored. We will discover new life and expect to answer mysteries such as why giant squid eyes are so large and how pygmy blue whales communicate. Outcomes from this project will guide policy on Australia s unexplored deep-sea. '',
