Overview

Professor Gray is the Director of the Centre for Health Services Research (CHSR) within the Faculty of Medicine. Prior to assuming this role, he directed both the Centre for Online Health and the Centre for Research in Geriatric Medicine, both of which have been incorporated into the new CHSR. The Centre is located on the Princess Alexandra Hospital campus in Brisbane.

He occupies the Masonic Chair in Geriatric Medicine, a position to which he was appointed when he joined the University in 2002.

He has formal training in medicine as a specialist geriatrician and in health administration. Previously he held senior management positions in the public health system in Victoria, in general management and aged care services.

His research interests focus on aged care policy, models of aged care service delivery, assessment and care planning systems, and in recent years, e-health and telemedicine strategies.

He leads international development of the interRAI Acute Care system of assessment, and is a Board member and the Australian coordinator for interRAI, a multinational research collaborative. He is the Principle Investigator on the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Telehealth, established in 2013. He is a Lead Investigator on the NHMRC Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre, and a Systems Investigator on the NHMRC Partnership Centre for Health Systems Sustainability.

Research Impacts

The primary research driver is to improve the quality of healthcare, and life in general, for older people, through the use of new technologies and systems of care. In recent years, this interest has broadened to vulnerable populations at all ages.

Over the course of his career, his research has influenced the design and operation of hospital, community and institutional aged care in Australia. He has contributed to the evolution of telehealth in Queensland and Australia. He has been a major contributor to the development of assessment systems internationally through the interRAI research collaborative, particularly with the hospital sector.
