Dr Hamid Aghighi

Dr Hamid Aghighi is currently a research fellow at the University of Queensland, School of Chemical Engineering. He holds a PhD in petroleum engineering from the University of New South Wales. Hamid has over 20 years of experience in both academia and industry. His areas of interest include petroleum geomechanics, hydraulic fracturing, wellbore stability and numerical modelling of rock and fluid behaviour in porous media.

Research Interests

  • Modelling of fluid flow and rock deformation in oil and gas reservoirs
    Coupled simulation of fluid flow, heat transfer and geomechanics near wellbores and within oil/gas reservoirs
  • Analytical and numerical modelling of hydraulic fracturing
    Simulation of Hydraulic fracture initiation and propagation in elastic/poroelastic, naturally fractured reservoirs
  • Wellbore stability analysis
    Mechanical earth modelling, stress profiling, wellbore failure modes and criteria, mud weight window characterisation
  • Laboratory experiments on rock mechanical and hydraulic properties
    Lab experiments on rocks (particularly clay-rich rocks) including Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Particle Size Analysis through Sieve analysis, Laser particle size analyzer, Sedigraph, Hydrocyclones, Stockes’ law based apparatus, Mechanical properties: Uni- and Triaxial Compression Tests, Tensile testing, porothermoelastic properties and stress arching
