Asela is a medical educator with over 15 years of experience in curriculum and assessment development. Asela obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and completed his PhD in Medical Education at the University of New South Wales in 2012. His PhD work on the development of a workplace-based assessment on teamwork and intern preparedness was awarded the ANZAME Postgraduate Prize. Asela has worked iat the medical schools at University of New South Wales and University of Colombo, as well as at the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Asela has first author publications in many high impact medical education journals including Academic Medicine, Medical Education, Medical Teacher and The Clinical Teacher.
Asela has first author publications in many high impact medical education journals including Academic Medicine, Medical Education, Medical Teacher and The Clinical Teacher, in diverse research areas including workplace based assessement of teamwork to support intern readiness and faculty development in resource constrained settings. He has over 25 peer reviewed publications with an H-Index of 9. He has secured several research awards and grants including the ANZAME (Australian and New Zealand Association for Medical Education) Postgraduate Student Prize in 2010 and the inaugural Faculty Development Research Grant awarded by AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe) in 2019.
