Overview

Dr. Sukumaran works on sorghum genetics and genomics at the Centre for Crop Science, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) at The University of Queensland.

Dr. Sukumaran (Siva) obtained his Bachelor's in Agriculture and Masters in Plant Breeding and Genetics from India, and his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Kansas State University, USA, in 2012. In 2013, Siva joined the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico as a post-doctoral fellow to work on the genetic basis of wheat adaptation. As a scientist, from 2015 to 2021, Siva led the spring wheat physiological pre-breeding at CIMMYT, Mexico to develop and deliver high-yielding, drought, and heat-tolerant germplasm to breeders around the world. Siva has expertise in translational research through the application of crop physiology, genetics, and pre-breeding.

In June 2022, Siva joined the sorghum genetics, genomics, and breeding team at the Hermitage research station, Warwick, Queensland, Australia.

Research Impacts

In his previous role at CIMMYT, Mexico, Dr. Sukumaran has developed several spring wheat pre-breeding lines for high yield potential, drought, and heat stress environments. Many lines were used as the parents of the elite breeding programs in developing countries. Siva has published >35 journal articles and 7 book chapters in sorghum and wheat research and pre-breeding.

For his contribution to wheat research and breeding, Dr. Sukumaran was awarded the Early Career Agricultural Scientist by the Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin (AASIO) in 2018.
