Role of the complement system in the healthy and diseased central nervous system (2008)

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to investigate the role of the complement system in the healthy and diseased central nervous system. To do this, we will examine complement factor expression and regulation in normal developing animals, as well as in animals with neurodegenerative disease. If there is an activation of complement in diseased animals, we will be able to use specific complement inhibitors to potentially ameliorate the disease process. A deeper understanding of complement in the normal and diseased state will allow for therapeutics to be designed with the goal of treating intractable neurodegenerative diseases in the aging population.
