Investigating the role of gene loops in regulating gene expression (2008–2009)

Abstract:
Regulation of gene expression underlies the control of most biological processes. Variations in this regulation contribute to many phenotypes, including disease predisposition. Whilst some of the DNA sequences controlling gene expression are known, those located some distance from the gene they control, are poorly characterized. The aim of this proposal is to identify the molecular interactions that mediate DNA loops between long-distance control elements and determine their role in regulating gene expression. The outcome of this research will be a better understanding of the molecular basis of gene expression and will help in the search for DNA sequence variants that contribute to regulatory changes in biologically important genes.
