Dr. Edmund W. Kanmiki is a mixed-methods researcher with expertise in epidemiology, population health, health systems, and health economics. His research focuses on social determinants of health, reproductive, maternal, and child health (RMCH), equity in health outcomes, community-based healthcare interventions and cost analysis of health programs. Recently, he has expanded his work to include Indigenous health and non-communicable diseases. Dr. Kanmiki holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with economics from the University for Development Studies and a master's degree in public health from the American University of Beirut. His doctoral thesis at the University of Queensland investigated how community-based primary healthcare strategies can improve equity in RMCH services for rural deprived communities.
Prior to joining the University of Queensland, Dr. Kanmiki held research roles at the University of Ghana and the Navrongo Health Research Centre. His expertise extends beyond academia, as he has provided consultancy services to prestigious national and multinational institutions including the Copenhagen Consensus, and the Palladium Group. Dr. Kanmiki is a recipient of the Mastercard Scholarship Award, the Elsevier Atlas Award, and an early-career research grant Award from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH). Dr. Kanmiki has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and research reports. He has presented his research at esteemed conferences, including the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Annual Conference (CUGH), the Population Association of America Conference (PAA), and the Health Systems Global Conference (HSG). His research has garnered media attention in prominent outlets like the Conversation in Australia, Health and Medicine in Canada, and Health and Wellness in the United Kingdom. His research and publications have informed health policies and programs at both national and sub-national levels.
