Strengthening the gateways: Building pathways to success through active learning (2016–2018)

Abstract:
This project is an upscaling of `Strengthening the First Year Gateways: Aligned, Literate and Flipped¿ (SFYG). The aims are to increase uptake of SFYG approaches in HaSS; to build capacity of academics to embed active learning strategies across more first-year and second year cornerstone courses and in so doing to address the second year slump in engagement and achievement. The significance lies in its outreach to significant numbers of students and up to 14 courses across all 7 HaSS schools. Outcomes include a well-developed set of resources and strategies for dissemination and uptake across the university; expanded project and Faculty-wide academic literacy websites; an on-line module to assist staff in development of active learning strategies using flipped classroom tools, and a local conference.
