Targeting inflammatory epithelial- immune cell networks during viral infection (2024)

Abstract:
Influenza A Virus (IAV) is a significant healthcare burden in Australia. Immunopathology, driven by excessive inflammation, underpins severe IAV disease, yet broad-spectrum immunosuppressants do not show clinical benefit. This project will characterise the molecular pathways underpinning an epithelial-immune cell inflammatory network in IAV infection, such that we can selectively inhibit these pathways without compromising anti-viral immune defence. This project will lead to high-impact publications in the innate immunity and virology fields, new models for screening therapeutics and further opportunities for collaboration with key stakeholders, all of which will accelerate my research program.
