Dr Bernardino Virdis is Senior Research Fellow at the Advanced Water Management Centre at The University of Queensland (UQ). He completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2010 investigating energy recovery from wastewater using microbial electrochemical technologies. In the following postdoctoral appointment at UQ, he focused on the characterization of microbial electrical interactions in natural and engineered systems. The approaches used in Dr Virdis’ current research draw on a range of expertise including environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, chemical engineering, material science, spectroscopy, electrochemistry and microbial electrocatalysis, which he applies to develop sustainable biotechnologies for the treatment of waste streams and their conversion into valuable products such as biofuels and industrial chemicals. To date, his publication record includes 5 book chapters, 37 refereed journal publications in major outlets in environmental science and technology, including the prestigious ISME Journal, Energy and Environmental Science, ChemSusChem, Water Research, and more. These publications have attracted over 1,700 citations, yielding Dr Virdis a h-index of 20. He delivered >20 peer-reviewed international conferences presentations, including as invited keynote speaker. Dr Virdis is a passionate educator, currently teaching Wastewater Treatment to Chemical Engineering students, and advising PhD and MPhil students.
