Matthew J. Roberts, BSc, MBBS, PhD, FRACS (Urol)
Matthew is a medical graduate of The University of Queensland and completed Urology specialty training in Queensland and New South Wales. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor “Frank” Gardiner investigating new biomarkers for the early detection and characterization of prostate cancer.
Matthew was recently successful in being awarded a highly competitive Metro North Clinician Research Fellowship and works as a surgeon-scientist with interests in urologic cancers, infections and other diseases for which he has authored many communications, including 1 book (Senior Editor) and 3 book chapters, and more than 80 peer reviewed manuscripts in international journals and presented his research at more than 20 international urology and clinical cancer meetings.
He has been the recipient of the NH&MRC Clinical Postgraduate Research Scholarship, Cancer Council Queensland PhD Scholarship and John Buckingham Travelling Fellowship (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons), as well as being selected for the Global Young Scientists Summit, 2016 following a competitive selection process by Australian Research Council and was the only UQ student selected. He has been awarded the Doctor-in-Training Research Scholarship by Avant Mutal Group, Highly Commended for the Research Support Award at the Metro North Excellence Awards (2020) and received the Professor William Egerton Surgical Research Award at the 2012 and 2011 RBWH Healthcare Symposia, being the first medical student to win this award.
Matthew has been an invited peer reviewer for NH&MRC Project Grants and more than 30 international journals, including as an Editorial Board member for the BJU International and recognized as being in the top 20 in UQ Researchers for Peer Review (per Publons). His research supervision includes MBBS Honours (First Class) and multiple junior doctors resulting in international publications and presentations.
