Overview

Dr. Michael Heitzmann is a Lecturer at the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering at the University of Queensland (UQ) and the group leader of the Composites Materials and Processes group. On his initiative a new UQ Composites group was formed and now has 13 academic staff and over 25 PhD students. Michael’s expertise is in composite materials and processes, in particular in the areas of biocomposite materials and short-cycle time manufacturing processes. The research carried out by Michal and his group has a very strong industry focus and his ability to develop innovative solutions is reflected by the large of collaborative projects with major global corporations such as Airbus or SABIC. Despite only having been at the University of Queensland for one year Michael has raised over 300’000 AUD of research funding in his first year.

From June 2013 to 2015 Michael was the project leader of the plant fibre Biocomposites project of the Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures, a 6.5 M AUD 5 year project. In the past 4 years Michael has invented three patents related to composite materials and processes and has also won the prestigious international Airbus Fly four Ideas research competition. He is also an author of the quality assurance chapter of the 3rd Edition of the AIAA Composite Materials for Aircraft Structures handbook.

Michael has a strong interest in promoting the profile of materials research of the University of Queensland and is part of the management team member Centre for Advanced Materials Processing and Manufacturing (AMPAM) and the Centre for High Performance Polymers (CHPP) at the University of Queensland.
