Overview

Dr Joel Corney’s research interests are in the fields of quantum phyisics, ultracold gases, and optics.

He completed his PhD at The University of Queensland in 2000. His chief research projects are in the areas of:

Bose-Einstein CondensationQuantum Phase-Space Simulation TechniquesQuantum Effects in Optical Fibres, andNonlinear Optics

Research Interests

  • Bose-Einstein Condensation
    Formation and dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) in a completely quantum mechanical regime, including BEC in a double well, and formation and dissociation of molecules in a BEC.
  • Quantum Phase-Space Simulation Techniques
    The development of simulation methods based on Gaussian operator expansions, a generalisation of the usual coherent-state based techniques such as the Wigner and positive-P methods from quantum optics. The new methods can be applied to Fermi systems.
  • Quantum Effects in Optical Fibres
    Studies into the effects of quantum noise on soliton propagation. Specific problems under study include: i) limits to soliton-based communications, and ii) soliton squeezing.
  • Nonlinear Optics
    Our work in this area has focussed on soliton propagation in periodic, X(2) materials. The periodicity allows effective control over the quadratic nonlinearity and induces cubic nonlinearities. Of particular interest has been what effects the periodicity has on the modulational instabilities and whether the induced cubic terms are sufficient to remove them.
