My name is Martin Schweinberger and I am a linguist with a focus on English, and I work as a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics here in the School of Languages and Cultures at the St. Lucia campus at University of Queensland, Australia. In addition, I hold a part-time Associate Professorship at the Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, where I am the principal data science advisor to the AcqVA Aurora Lab at the UiT Aurora Center for Language Acquisition, Variation & Attrition. At UQ, I am also co-director of the Language Technology and Data Analysis Laboratory (LADAL, see https://slcladal.github.io/index.html) and on the steering committee of the ARDC funded Australian Text Analytics Platform (ATAP).
I studied at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and Universität Kassel where I graduated in 2008 with an MA in English Philology, Philosophy, and Psychology. After my MA, I remained in Kassel for a short while but soon moved to Hamburg where I worked on and later received a PhD in English linguistics. During my time in Hamburg, I specialized in corpus linguistics and quantitative, computational analyses of language data.
After my PhD I worked as a lecturer or research assistant in English Studies institutes at several universities (Universität Hamburg, Universität Kassel, Freie Universität Berlin, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald, and the Leuphana Universität Luneburg). Before starting at UQ as Lecturer, I worked as full-time Associate Professor at UiT Aurora Center for Language Acquisition, Variation & Attrition, and before that I worked as Postdoctoral Research at The School of Languages and Cultures at UQ. Before taking up this previous appointment, I was Project Leader/Principal Investigator of the VowelChartProject in the Language Technology Group of the Computer Science department at Universität Hamburg. The VowelChartProject provided computer-based visual feedback for language learners on their pronunciation accuracy in English.
