Overview

I am a Senior Lecturer in the University of Queensland's Co-Innovation Group. Prior to joining UQ, I set up two UK-based technology startups; Pismo Software a research and development consultancy, and Switch That an IoT startup. I have worked as a lecturer at Leeds and Loughborough Universities, a product manager in the Media Processing Division at ARM in Cambridge and as a postdoctoral research fellow at The University of Manchester.

I am keenly motivated by research with impact and enjoy engaging with commercial companies to develop novel technology to solve real world problems. My research areas have included creating effective shared virtual enviroments, exploiting human perception to create the illusion of high-quality graphics, tactile interfaces, 3D reconstruction from photographs, material appearance modelling, visualisation, physically based simulation, IoT and cyber security.

I serve the computer graphics community as an elected director at large at ACM SIGGRAPH and am a member of the SIGGRAPH Asia Conference Advisory Group. I am also a member of the steering committee of the ACM PACM journals, an associate editor of the Computers & Graphics journal and a senior member of the ACM.

    Computer generated, synthetic, immersive environments and real environments augmented with computer generated information.
  • IoT
    The Internet of things and smart cities.
  • Visualisation
    Ways to represent scientific phenomena and information through computer graphics metaphors and augmentations.
  • Material Appearance
    Modelling the reflectance and structure of materials for high quality graphics rendering.
  • 3D Scene Reconstruction
    Recovering 3D scenes from images.
  • Human Computer Interaction
    The methods by which people interact with computing devices of all kinds as well as systems of computing devices.
  • Haptics
    Force Feedback and Tactile Interfaces.

Research Impacts

The impact of my research has been twofold, first my work on material appearance aquisition has been used by commercial companies in 3D reconstruction and rendering of high-quality interiors, games and in a dome projected movie. Second, my work has been used to influence technical elements of a range of products by startups in the IoT and 3D material capture areas.

My most recent work (prior to joining UQ) in the area of smart heating systems has social impact. Particularly in two ways, first to help monitor elderly and vulnerable people's heating use during cold spells and ensure they are kept warm. Second, to ensure properly maintaned heating works to peak efficiency, thereby reducing heating costs, repair costs and emissions.
